YA books on the big (and small) screen

Almost a year ago, The Hunger Games movie was released into theaters and proved that a strong female heroine from YA literature can bring draw a huge audience. In turn, the movie motivated adults and teens alike who had never read the series to get their hands on a copy of The Hunger Games book. The Hunger Games provides just one example of how prevalent YA literature is in popular culture today. The shows Pretty Little Liars, The Lying Game, Gossip Girl, and The Vampire Diaries all started out as YA books before those characters stepped onto our television screens. Even more movies and TV shows based on YA books are in the works and set to be released in 2013 and 2014. Will they find the same success as Harry Potter, Twilight, or The Hunger Games? Check out this list I compiled, and feel free to add any that I overlooked in the Comments section below:

  • Based on Catching Fire, the second book in Suzanne Collins' best-selling Hunger Games series.
  • Book synopsis: By winning the annual Hunger Games, District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have secured a life of safety and plenty for themselves and their families, but because they won by defying the rules, they unwittingly become the faces of an impending rebellion.
  • Stay tuned to the blog and the library newsletter for a Catching Fire Movie Release Party in November 2013!

Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters
  • Release date: February 14, 2014
  • Based on Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead.
  • Book synopsis: Two years after a horrible incident made them run away, vampire princess Lissa and her guardian-in-training Rose are found and returned to St. Vladimir's Academy, where one focuses on mastering magic, the other on physical training, while both try to avoid the perils of gossip, cliques, gruesome pranks, and sinister plots.
  • Cast:  Zoey Deuth (Rose), Danila Kozlovsky (Dimetri), Lucy Fry (Lissa)
  • More books in the series: Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound, Last Sacrifice.

Divergent
  • Release date: March 1, 2014
  • Cast: Shailene Woodley (Tris), Kate Winslet; rumors everywhere about who will play Four (Alex Pettyfr? Lucas Till? Jeremy Irvine?)
  • Based on the book by Veronica Roth.
  • Book synopsis: In a future Chicago, sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior must choose among five predetermined factions to define her identity for the rest of her life, a decision made more difficult when she discovers that she is an anomoly who does not fit into any one group, and that the society she lives in is not perfect after all.
  • In February an open casting call was held in Chicago for movie extras. According to the Chicago Tribune the movie will be shot entirely in Chicago.
  • More books in the series: Insurgent. The third book in the series, jokingly referred to by both Roth and fans as “Detergent,” will be released October 22, 2013.
Delirium
  • Release date: depends on whether the pilot is picked up by Fox.
  • According to author Lauren Oliver, filming on the pilot for this TV show is set to begin in March.
  • Cast: Emma Roberts (Lena), Jeanine Mason (Hana), Daren Kagasoff (Alex), Greg Sulkin (Julian), Billy Campbell (Thomas Fineman)
  • Based on the Delirium series by Lauren Oliver: Delirium, Pandemonium, and Requiem.
  • Synopsis of the first book in the series: Lena looks forward to receiving the government-mandated cure that prevents the delirium of love and leads to a safe, predictable, and happy life, until ninety-five days before her eighteenth birthday and her treatment, when she falls in love.

And adaptations of these books are also in the works:
I am very excited for Catching Fire, and am already brainstorming crafts and games for a movie release party at the library! I can't wait for Divergent, because I love that book series as well, and think that Shailene Woodley is a great pick to play Tris. How cool is it that the movie will be filmed entirely in Chicago? I'm also interested to see how the Vampire Academy movie turns out. I really enjoyed all the books in that series because Rose is such a strong character. Plus, the awesome supporting characters (Adrian!) are well-written too. I just hope it doesn't suffer from people who are sick of Twilight. This movie has a huge potential for great fight scenes and some swoon-worthy moments.

Which movie/TV adaptation are you most looking forward to seeing? Do you read the books before you see the movies, or the other way around? Are there any books not on this list that you think would make a good movie and/or TV show? My picks are Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkin and the Across the Universe series by Beth Revis.

And lastly, and most importantly, who do *you* think should play Four in Divergent?

Share your thoughts on The Hunger Games trailer

On Monday Good Morning America premiered the movie trailer for The Hunger Games. Watch it below:

I think the movie looks amazing; I get chills (and tears in my eyes) each time I watch the trailer. I'm glad to see that the movie will be just as gritty and terrifying as the book. I also love the way the trailer was edited so that it ends with the countdown to the start of the Games. That definitely got my heart pounding. What do you think?

The Hunger Games: First trailer!

We had our first look at the film adaptation of The Hunger Games during Sunday's Video Music Awards on MTV. In the short clip we see Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) running from fireballs in the arena and hear a pep talk from Gale (Liam Hemsworth) in voiceover: "You're stronger than they are. You are. They just want a good show, that's all they want. You know how to hunt. Show 'em how good you are."

Are you ready? I know I am. I can't wait for March 23!

The Hunger Games movie: Peeta and Gale cast!

Finally! On Monday it was announced that Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) will play the role of Peeta Mellark and Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song) will play Gale Hawthorne in the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) has already been cast as Katniss Everdeen.

I am very happy that Hutcherson is playing Peeta; a couple weeks ago I posted about my hope that he would get the role. I did not have any strong feelings on who should play Gale, apart from someone a bit rugged and believable as a hunter at home in the woods. I do not remember seeing Hemsworth's name among fan choices for Gale, so I was surprised at that part of the announcement. I have not watched any of Hemsworth's prior work, so I will to trust director Gary Ross's decision (and I'm going to ignore the fact that Hemsworth dated Miley Cyrus). I am totally avoiding reading any online article comments because I do not want to read people's negativity about the actors cast. How can we say so-and-so is a bad choice if the movie hasn't even started filming yet? I doubt author Suzanne Collins would go along with a decision to ruin her vision of the characters she created. If you are not sure about whether Hutcherson and Hemsworth are the right choices for the roles, maybe you'll change your mind after reading Collins' support of the casting of Peeta and Gale.

As of now, no other actors have been cast. EW.com suggests Robert Downey Jr. for the role of hard-drinking Haymitch and Elizabeth Banks for the bubbly Effie. And one writer, Karen Valby, has the same actress suggestion for Prim as me -- Kiernan Shipka from Mad Men!

What do you think of the casting? Do you agree that Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth will fit into their roles alongside Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss? And, most importantly, how are you going to stand the wait until the movie hits theaters on March 23, 2012? I think we need to get a countdown going on the blog!

Jennifer Lawrence is "the girl on fire"

It was announced last week that twenty-year-old actress Jennifer Lawrence will play the role of Katniss Everdeen in the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games trilogy. Fans like me have been waiting to hear which buzzworthy actress would win this coveted role. I previously posted about how True Grit's Hailee Steinfield was my pick to play Katniss, and I was initially disappointed to hear about Jennifer Lawrence's casting. But after reading this article at EW.com in which director Gary Ross explains how he and author Suzanne Collins needed a mature actress to play Katniss, I found myself more supportive of the choice. And then any lingering doubts I had were erased when I read this exclusive statement from Suzanne Collins in which she praises Jennifer Lawrence's audition. Lawrence's previous work includes Winter's Bone, for which she received a Best Actress nomination, and the upcoming X-Men: First Class.

Now that director Ross has found Katniss, I hope we'll soon hear about who will play Peeta, Gale, Prim, Rue, and the other characters. As I write this, no other casting announcements have been made. Josh Hutchersen, previously seen as Laser in The Kids Are All Right, has talked about why he loves the character of Peeta, and I am crossing my fingers that he'll get the role. He definitely understands the character from having read the books himself, and he is a talented actor. Do you have any casting ideas about who should play Peeta or Gale?

Who should be cast in The Hunger Games movie?

Movie studio Lionsgate has the rights to Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy, and production is estimated to begin late this spring or in early summer, with an expected release date of March 23, 2012. This means that even though fans have finished all the books in the series (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay), we still have the movies to look forward to. I hope that actual teenage actors, and not twentysomethings, are hired for the roles of Katniss, Peeta, and Gale. If you've read the books, which actors and actresses do you see playing the characters in the adaptation of the first book? Would you prefer that unknown actors and actresses are cast as these characters? Here are the characters to cast, along with a couple of my suggestions:

Katniss Everdeen
Sixteen-year-old Katniss hunts and trades for food to provide for her mother and younger sister. She wears her long dark hair in a braid. Entertainment Weekly recommends Chloe Moretz for this role. My choice: Hailee Steinfeld, who was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in True Grit. She is talented, the right age (fifteen), and has the toughness needed to play Katniss.

Peeta Mellark
Although Katniss knew of Peeta before The Hunger Games, they have never spoken to each other, despite an important event from when they were younger that Katniss never forgot. One night Peeta threw a couple loaves of bread out to Katniss, who was starving and foraging behind his father's bakery for food. Peeta is described as being "medium height, stocky build, [with] ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." Throughout the Games it is difficult for Katniss to know whether Peeta is being genuine or is simply "playing the game."

Gale
Gale is eighteen years old and best friends with Katniss. He takes care of his family and goes out hunting with Katniss, who he has nicknamed Catnip. Katniss notes of Gale: "He could be my brother. Straight black hair, olive skin, we even have the same gray eyes." While Katniss denies having any romantic feelings for Gale, he may care for her more than just a friend. Do any actors come to mind when you read the following description of Gale?
...if he wants kids, Gale won't have any trouble finding a wife. He's good-looking, he's strong enough to handle the work in the mines, and he can hunt. You can tell by the way the girls whisper about him when he walks by in school that they want him. It makes me jealous but not for the reason people might think. Good hunting partners are hard to find. (p. 10)
Rue
In the book, Katniss says that Rue "can move through the woods like a shadow..." The other tributes underestimate Rue due to her small size. She loves music and is friends with some mockingjays back at home. Only twelve-years-old, she reminds Katniss of her sister.
She has bright, dark eyes and satiny brown skin and stands tilted up on her toes with her arms slightly extended to her sides, as if ready to take wing at the slightest sound. It's impossible not to think of a bird. (p. 98-9)
Prim Everdeen
Prim is the younger sister of Katniss, and has light hair and blue eyes like their mother. My choice to play this character: Eleven-year-old Kiernan Sherpka, best known for her role as Sally Draper on Mad Men.

Haymitch Abernathy
Described as "a paunchy, middle-aged man," Haymitch is drunk when he is first introduced, and is one of only two tributes from District 12 who have won The Hunger Games. I think Robbie Coltrane, who plays Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, would be a good choice for this character.

I had trouble thinking of teenage actors for the roles of Peeta and Gale. Who have I been missing? Plus, don't forget these other roles: Effie Trinket, the mayor, Cinna, the rest of the tributes in The Hunger Games....
