Add a sticky note to our National Library Week collage in the teen area!

To celebrate National Library Week, we are creating a sticky note collage on the wall in the teen area. Just like this year's theme, Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library, the possibilities for what you can post on the wall are endless!

Draw a sketch! Share a quote! Doodle a drawing! Get creative!

Members of TAG, Anime Club, and Maker Club got the collage started by working on sticky notes at various club meetings the last couple months. We still have lots of blank space to cover with colorful notes, so stop by the teen area, grab some sticky notes and markers, and stick up your creations!

International Games Day is Saturday!

This Saturday is International Games Day, a day when libraries around the world celebrate the educational, recreational, and social value of games. Seriously, click this link to see a map of all the libraries participating this year!

At the Dundee Library we will have games in the Meeting Room and Craft Room from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come participate or hang out with your friends. Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 games will be set up in the Meeting Room, and board games will be set up in the Craft Room. Feel free to bring your own videogames, DS/3DS consoles, controllers, Magic and/or Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

International Games Day is this Saturday!

Gamers of all ages are welcome to attend our International Games Day program at the Dundee Library on Saturday. The event is from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Videogames on the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 will be set up in the Meeting Room, plus we will have space for Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering matches. If you are new to Yu-Gi-Oh, I will have starter decks you may use to practice.

At 2 p.m. we will have a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament. The top 3 players will win GameStop gift cards!

Board games including Scrabble, Battleship, Connect 4, Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, and Operation will be available to play in the Craft Room.

Libraries all around the world will be celebrating the popularity and educational value of videogames and board games on International Games Day, November 16. I hope to see you there!

Libraries around the world will celebrate the popularity and educational value of board and video games on International Games Day, Saturday, November 16.

The International Games Day program at the Dundee Library will be held 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. in both the Meeting Room and Craft Room on the lower level. We will have board games in the Craft Room and videogames, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Magic The Gathering going on in the Meeting Room. Plus, we will have a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament at 2 p.m.

This drop-in program is for all ages. I hope to see you there!

City of Bones buttons

These are some buttons I made for the City of Bones Movie Release Party this weekend: angelic power runes and "Shadowhunters: Looking Better in Black Than the Widows of our Enemies Since 1234." At the party even more runes will be available for you to make into buttons, or you can design your own.

City of Memes

Have you registered for our City of Bones Movie Release Party yet? The party is Saturday, August 24 at 2:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Dundee Library. We'll make runes buttons, answer trivia questions, and even give away a movie poster!

On the official Mortal Instruments: City of Bones website, fans are able to create their own memes featuring the images of Jace, Clary, Alec, Simon, Isabelle, Valentine, and more from the film. Go to the Extras section and click on City of Memes. Select your image, and then add text! Here are some memes I created... It's hard to stop once you start making them!

Teen Crafts and Book Tasting this week

We have a couple teen programs coming up this week. Tomorrow afternoon is Teen Crafts at 3 p.m. We will reuse maps from old atlases to make recycled flowers:










If you missed our previous Teen Crafts session in June, you can still make your own map buttons too!

On Wednesday night, join us for a Book Tasting at 7 p.m. You'll be able to skim books in a variety of genres and hopefully come away with at least one title you're interesting in reading!

Teen summer reading starts today!

Grades 6-12 may sign up at the Dundee Library Information Desk or Randall Oaks Branch Library for this year's summer reading program Have Book - Will Travel. All finishers will receive a paperback book! Take a look at the book prizes we have:

TAG meets this Saturday

TAG meets at 1:30 PM this Saturday, December 3 in the Teen area. We will pull some Charles Dickens-related books to make a display and then head downstairs to the Meeting Room to set up for the Dickens in Dundee movie, The Muppet Christmas Carol. The movie has a 3 PM start time. TAG members will help distribute popcorn and drinks and then enjoy watching the movie!

Recipes from the Harry Potter Movie Release Party

We had an excited group of 45 Harry Potter fans attend our Harry Potter Movie Release Party last Saturday. For the party I prepared some food and drinks that have been mentioned in the books as being served on the Hogwarts Express or in The Three Broomsticks.

Rock Cakes

This was the first time I've made this recipe, and I definitely didn't cut the butter into the flour enough, leaving the butter to run out of the cakes, which I'm guessing is the reason why they came out pretty flat. Oh well, at least they tasted good.

Cauldron Cakes
All I did was prepare one of my favorite cupcake recipes (Devil's food), turned the cupcakes upside down, and dipped them in a huge bowl of chocolate ganache glaze. Then I sprinkled some purple sugar on top of each to make a bubbling-potion effect. I also got the bubbling-potion effect in another way-- I have a set of three stackable cookie racks that I was using to place the cakes after I dipped them in the ganache. The glaze from the cakes on the top tier dripped down on top of the cakes in the lower tiers, which gave the appearance of a bubbling cauldron!

To bake the cupcakes I used silicone baking cups. I like using the baking cups because then you do not waste paper lining holders and they are easy to clean. Plus, they are perfect for making the cupcakes look like cauldrons -- if you use paper liners you'll have to remove each one by hand before you glaze them.

I added some water to each batch because I thought it was a little too sweet. Very delicious, and a big hit with all the Harry Potter fans! We went through 3 pitchers at the party!


Butterbeer
(not able to take a picture due to the HP Madness at the party)
Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass and then top with a teaspoon of butterscotch syrup. Pour cold vanilla cream soda or club soda over the ice cream and stir.

I found several promising looking Butterbeer recipes from MuggleNet and other sources on the Internet, but decided to go for a simpler version of the recipes I'd run across. I'd originally hoped to make a warm version of Butterbeer, but it would have been too difficult to serve such a large group without having cooking capability at the library.

TAG meeting this Saturday

Don't forget that we have a TAG (Teen Advisory Group) meeting this Saturday, September 2, at 9:30 AM in the Craft Room. If you have never made it to a meeting before, no big deal! Newcomers are always welcome. We have some fun teen programs coming up in the fall!

Photos from our Eclipse Movie Release Party

On Friday we had an Eclipse Movie Release Party for fans of the Twilight books and movies. We even celebrated the vampire Edward Cullen's birthday (he turned 109 last Monday). In addition to answering trivia questions for prizes and listening to music, we also enjoyed eating Red Velvet Vampire Cupcakes and Jacob Black Chocolate Chip Cupcakes (made by yours truly)! I added a few pictures below. There are more on the library's Facebook page. Thanks to everyone who came to the party! We had 25 attend.

Reception for the 2010 Dundee Crown Student Art Show

This Saturday the Dundee Library will host a reception for the student artists participating in this year's Dundee Crown Student Art Show. At 1 PM awards for Best of Show, Teacher’s Choice and First, Second and Honorable Mention will be presented. The awards are decided by a panel of three judges with an art background. Refreshments will be served.

If you can't make the reception, you can still stop by the library to look at the artwork, which will be on display through April 13.
